Voyage Around the Pacific

Bruce Maunsell, September 30, 2024

I am halfway through a voyage around the Pacific. I left my home port, Whangarei, New Zealand, on my Tashiba 40, Bob, in April 2023 and sailed to Japan via Fiji, Chuuk (Micronesia), Saipan (Marianas), and back to Japan. After several months in Japan, I crossed the North Pacific directly to British Columbia. That was a 4,500-mile passage that took 40 days. I then spent three months exploring the waterways and coastline of British Columbia between Victoria and Prince Rupert. I like to sail the passages solo and then have friends or family join me for a few weeks exploring the places I’m visiting.

I sailed south to Sausalito in mid-September, which is where I am now. I plan to head down to Mexico for a few months, then head west through Polynesia and be back in New Zealand by October 2025. I’ve experienced unique and special things about every place I’ve visited. The common element has been the kind and welcoming people I’ve encountered. Cruising Japan by boat was a great opportunity to learn about the culture and history from a perspective that not many visitors can. I came to really appreciate the people and their approach to life; however, depopulation and the aging population are serious challenges for Japan.

British Columbia was special because of its huge scale and the beauty of its wilderness and wildlife. It must be one of the best cruising areas anywhere.

Preferring more natural environments, I’ve tended to stay away from cities and urban areas. In Japan, I did park my boat in a marina in Fukuoka for a few months during the winter; but there isn’t really a yachting culture there. So, Sausalito has been my first opportunity to experience a place where boats and the maritime industry are so much a part of the local culture. I love that—and also love how Spaulding is doing so much to celebrate and retain the local maritime heritage.

I found out about Spaulding via the Damner family, who have been very generous with their hospitality while I’ve been in Sausalito. They have a close association with Spaulding. I have a deep passion for maritime history, particularly wooden sailing boats, so I was immediately drawn to the place. The more I have learnt about the ethos and the good work that is done through the Center, the more excited I have become. I love the way the public are encouraged to visit and interact. The blend of public courses, apprentice training, boat restoration, and provision of services for boat owners is a terrific blend of offerings. The library is a great asset. The beautiful old boats I saw there are very special. Visiting Spaulding has been one of the highlights of my Sausalito visit.

The people of the Bay Area are truly fortunate to have Spaulding. I wish there were something like it in my home port. With Spaulding at its heart, Sausalito is truly special. Consider making an impact through donation, time or gifts to sustain the charm of this unique place.
