More on Dixie

Dixie is a Pulsifer Hampton, built in Brunswick, Maine in 2002. her design is based on the Casco Bay Hampton, built by Charlie Gomes from 1902 through the 1950’s, and powered by the “make-and-break” one-lunger gas engine. The design originated in the Hampton area of New Hampshire in the early 1800’s. Used extensively in Maine for lobstering, it sailed with a variety of rigs until adapted for power in the early 1900’s. It remains popular to the current day as transportation all along the New England Coast.

Dixie was built for local sailor Hugh Harris, who after shipping her to San Francisco, added the roof and cabin structure. Mr. Harris donated her to Spaulding Marine Center in August of 2011.

Construction: Strip planked white pine on oak frames; bronze fastened.
